As a part of the Long Island Railroad’s parking lot reconstruction at Montauk Station, B. Thayer Associates worked with the client to develop a landscape which would be both functional and create an inviting atmosphere for travelers. Our team of landscape architect’s reviewed the site and the surrounding landscape to develop a diverse set of plantings that would highlight the unique features of the ecosystem at Long Island’s terminus station. The landscape incorporates new drainage features for the parking lot, as well as an expanded planting area close to the railroad platform. In keeping with the sustainable design concepts that we pursue in all of our projects, the plant palette consists of native species well suited for the area and aides the drainage system which features Best Management Practices (BMPs) including bioswales and a shallow retention pond. Following construction, the new parking lot will provide much-needed improvements for the heavily-used train station, as well as a vibrant landscape to enhance the natural character of the area.
