The project involves the replacement of the bridge carrying Westchester Avenue over the Sheridan Expressway in the Bronx, New York. The existing steel girders and concrete deck exhibit severe deterioration and require complete replacement. The elevated subway truss columns and span carried by the Westchester Avenue Bridge need to be relocated in order to achieve this goal.
B. Thayer performed a detailed topographical survey of the project area to exacting standards, including locating major structural members supporting the elevated tracks.
When the recoverable control network proved insufficient, B. Thayer survey technicians densified and strengthened the network utilizing Rapid Static GPS techniques coupled with standard total station traversing. Once this was accomplished a detailed topographic survey was completed in order to update the existing mapping. Field evidence and record maps were then used to confirm underground utility locations in the area.
